Mike Enriquez is Miguel Castro Enriquez in real life. He was born in Santa Ana, Manila, Philippines on September 29, 1951. Mike is a very popular TV and broadcaster and is also a famous radio commentator in the field of Philippine broadcasting media. He is currently the President of GMA regional and radio subsidiary, RGMA Network Inc.
Mike started his career in media as a staff announcer at Manila Broadcasting Company way back 1969. His interest triggered when he visited one of his friends in a radio company. Since then, she had been working in various broadcasting related work such as reporter, news editor, program director, station manager, until he became a manager of a particular radio network. He was also employed in another radio network, Freedom Broadcasting Radio Network and Radio Mindanao Network. He became Vice President of the said network. He had also worked at Mellow Touch 94.7, as voice over, and he became famous as a disc jockey with the name “Baby Michael.” Mike had a short stint in the movie “mahirap Maging Pogi,” in 1992, an Andrew E. starrer.
In 1995, he was hired by GMA Network as a newscaster in the 1995 elections, where he was given his break in his TV newscasting career. He became popular in the early evening news show “Saksi,” after which he anchored a late night news entitled GMA Network News, in 1998. He returned to “Saksi” and in 2004 he moved to “24 Oras,” with anchorwoman Mel Tiangco.
Mike also hosted “Imbestigador,” aired over GMA Pinoy TV and Q, and can be heard over ‘Saksi SA Dobol B,” every morning on weekdays. Mike Enriquez has been awarded as one of the most child-friendly personalities from the Southeast Asian Foundation for Children and by the Anak TV Seal Awards for three consecutive years.
Mike is the eldest among three siblings and has lived an active childhood. He was also very much active in the church which led him to be an altar boy and dreamt to be a Franciscan priest. Sad to say, his parents did not allow him to stay in the seminary to fulfill his dream to be a priest. Rather, he enrolled in one of the prestigious universities in Manila, De La Salle College and took up Liberal Arts in Commerce. He graduated in 1973 and at present he is teaching Broadcast Management. He is also a current member of the Board of Trustees of La Salle Greenhills and a Treasurer and Chairman of the Finance Committee. His wife is Lizabeth “Baby” Yumping and they were married for twenty nine years already, but was not blessed with children.
Mike had been a recipient of a Golden Dove Award for Male Best Newscaster and of the Ka Doroy Valecia Broadkaster Of the Year Award in 1999. In the same year, he was also given the award by the Philippine Movie Press Club of the Philippines as “Star Award for Best Male Newscaster.” He also won an award for Best Newscaster in the Asian Television Awards held in Singapore in 1999. Mike Enriquez was the only Filipino to win this award until now.
