Marietta Subong who is popularly known as Pokwang in Philippine show business is born on August 27, 1970 in Antipolo City, Metro Manila. She is a Filipina celebrity, an actress, a comedienne, a singer, an impersonator and a TV Host. She is also a businesswoman being a co-owner of a local salon. Pokwang is ninth among 12 siblings. Her humble beginnings pursued her to strive harder in life to help her family step up from the life of poverty. She started in the entertainment industry as a dancer/entertainer in Japan and even pushed her limits to work as a domestic helper in Abu Dhabi just so to make both ends meet for her family.
Little to everyone’s knowledge, Pokwang’s first TV appearance was as at ABC 5’s Eezy Dancing being one of the backup dancers of the show. She was given a break in Philippine television when she joined Yes Yes Show in 2004 as a contender in a segment, Clown in A Million. She won the contest and was given a contract to work with ABS-CBN as one of their talents. After her winning, she appeared in many drama anthology shows, movies and sitcoms. She has co-hosted in various television shows; among them are Pinoy Big Brother, Wowowee and Pilipinas Win na Win.
Pokwang also appeared in various films playing supporting roles. Among these films were Bcuz of U, Dubai, D Lucky Ones, Apat Dapat, Dapat Apat, The Adventures of Pureza: Queen of the Riles and many others. She was given a break in her first starring role for Star Cinema portraying an OFW, Medy in A Mother’s Story released in 2012. Her first starring role gained many critics however made Pokwang even better at what she does best.
Pokwang as an impersonator, is famous for impersonating Dionisia, Manny Pacquiao’s mother, and Annabelle Rama. Being a natural born entertainer, she was also able to release an album in discography entitled Pokwang… Ang Album Na May Puso. An album under Star Records, Happy Yipee Yehey! Nananana!, released on November 2011 with her single, No Boypren, No Problem.
Her efforts being an actress gained her various awards; Best Comedy Actress award from the Philippine Movie Press Club for her portrayal as Etang Sukimura in ABS CBN’s sitcom Aalog-Alog and the Best Female Comedian award from People’s Choice Awards. To this date, Pokwang is actively contributing her talents as part of ABS CBN’s Star Magic group of entertainers.
