Lea Salonga whose real name is Maria Lea Carmen Imutan Salonga was born on February 22, 1971 at Angeles, Pampanga Philippines. She was born to parents Feliciano Genuino Salonga and Ligaya Alcantara Imutan. Lea Salonga is one of the greatest Filipino talents known around the globe. The power of her voice brought her to gain all the achievements that she has to this date.
At the age of 7, she began her singing career in the musical The King and I 1978 followed by The Sound of Music, Paper Moon Cat on a Hot Tin Roof, Fantasticks, The Goodbye Girl, and Fiddler on the Roof and The Rose Tattoo. At the age of 10 she made her first album called Small voice and became a member of German Moreno’s That’s Entertainment in 1986. She also appeared in a number of films such as Like Father like Son, Ninja Kids, Captain Barbell, Pik Pak Boom and Tropang Bulilit. At a tender age she was nominated best child actress and gained awards as best child performer.
Lea Salonga was chosen to perform in the musical Miss Saigon taking the role of Kim in 1989 at the age of 17. She was the first ever pure blooded Filipina who won a Tony Award in Broadway musical through the musical Miss Saigon. Lea also performed for the singing voice of Disney princesses, Jasmine of Aladdin in 1992 and for Mulan in 1998 and 2004 respectively. In 1993 she teamed up with Brad Kane to sing the award winning song, A Whole New World of Disney’s Aladdin at the 65th Annual Academy Awards where the song has won an Oscar that year. In November 7, 2005 Lea have her very First concert at the prestigious Carnegie Hall telecast attended by many Americans and Filipinos.
Lea Salonga married Robert Charles Chien on January 10, 2004, a Chinese-Japanese fellow she met on the set of Flower Drum Song. Lea gave birth to a lovely baby girl and named her Nicole Beverly, born on May 16th, 2006 in Manila. At present Lea announced that she will be one of the coaches on an upcoming show to be featured in ABS-CBN, The Voice of the Philippines. Her role as a coach will help young Filipinos hone their talents and become an achiever as she is.
